Research, Assessment and Measurement, Inc. conducted a study in
the Hacienda La Puente and Whittier school districts (1997-98) at
the request of the TREE Foundation in Los Angeles. Using the Emergent
Literacy Development Inventory (ELDI), RAM found the end-of-year
Waterford Early Reading Program™ students outperformed comparison groups in phonological awareness
(78.8% vs. 71.9% ; p<.05) and letter recognition (91.2% vs. 85.9%).
The overall total score for the Waterford group was significantly
higher than for the comparison group (85.2% vs. 79.6% ; p<.0008).
