Caldwood Elementary School
Beaumont Independent School District
Beaumont, TX

Caldwood is a diverse (72% minority) Title 1 School which has served
an average of 370 students/year on the Waterford
Early Reading Program™ since 1999. As the first
school in Beaumont ISD, Caldwood has been a referral site for
other schools in the district. Recently the school added a small
lab of Waterford
Early Math & Science™ for testing purposes.
Waterford is part of every classroom teacher’s instruction,
and its data drives teaching in the school. Teachers
listen to running records on the computer to check for fluency
and independent reading levels. If a child is falling behind,
teachers
give students extra turns during the day to catch
up. In first grade, Waterford is used as part of"
learning station" time in the Guided Reading/ Language Arts
block. Class and individual summaries are used for
tutoring or accelerated reading. Parents are also included in
the process. Evening meetings are held several times a year, with outstanding attendance due to innovative games, activities, and
great food planned by the school. To encourage attendance,
parent meetings are held also during the day, and
a Spanish translator is provided. Parents volunteer to help in
the classrooms and sort books for teachers.
Kindergarten students at Caldwood have been
testing using the Marie Clay Observation since 1999.
Before implementation, students were scoring between 3 and 7 out
of 24 on the Concepts about Print (CAP) sub-test.
Since using Waterford, CAP scores have risen to an
average of 16-20. State Test scores have risen each year since
Waterford was implemented. Recent Texas Assessment
of Academic Skills (TAAS) testing of students who have used Waterford
since Kindergarten put Caldwood over 80%—making Caldwood
a "Recognized Campus" for
the first time.
