Solution—SuccessMaker® and SuccessMaker® Enterprise

West Orange Public Schools implemented Pearson Digital Learning's SuccessMaker in 1998 and  SuccessMaker Enterprise in 2005.  Programs are funded by the District Board of Education and Title I.

There are a total of 2,500 students using the SuccessMaker program.  All SuccessMaker workstations utilize the Windows platform.  All elementary students spend a minimum of 90 minutes each week on the program.  Identified students in the middle schools and high school spend 60 to 90 minutes on the program.

Washington Elementary School

Washington Elementary School is in an area that has the lowest socio-economic level.  Over 60% of the students are on free/reduced lunch.  This is a school whose ethnic breakdown is over 95% minority.  Six years ago, the scores of fourth grade students taking the Language Arts Literacy portion of the New Jersey State Test indicated a 39% passing rate, and Washington School became an "at‑risk" school.

Intervention procedures were put into place which included staff development workshops and the mandatory use of the SuccessMaker program by every student for 90 minutes each week (45 minutes in reading and 45 minutes in mathematics).  As students used SuccessMaker courses, data was gathered monthly to track progress and identify the weak skill areas for each student.

Over a 3-year period, student's demographic data, state and district test data, and strand levels in SuccessMaker were evaluated to determine a level of achievement in SuccessMaker that corresponds to a passing score in the New Jersey state tests.  Elementary teachers evaluated their students every two months using the various SuccessMaker reports.

The following data represents the Language Arts Literacy Scores for Washington School fourth grade students during first 3 years of using the SuccessMaker program:

Student's Language Arts Literacy Scores have steadily increased since implementing SuccessMaker at the Washington School.  Before implementation in 2000, students had a passing rate of only 39%.  In 2001, the passing rate significantly increased to 82.6%.  By 2002, the passing rate steadily increased to 91.1%.  Presently student scores have remained high through 2005 and Washington School has met all "No Child Left Behind" State benchmarks for the past 3 years.

Since implementation of SuccessMaker at the district level, the program's reporting system has been invaluable in tracking the student's monthly progress and identifying weak areas prior to state testing.  They system is also understood by the teachers.  The program provides individualization to help meet district goals for differentiated instruction.  As a result, the overall performance of the students have improved substantially and have resulted in a more positive attitude towards academic work and increased success on the New Jersey state tests.
