Saturn Elementary School
Brevard County School District
Cocoa, FL |

 |
- Using Pearson Digital Learning SuccessMaker, Saturn Elementary
has been an "A" School for the last three years bringing their
original grade up from a "C".
- Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) scores in reading
and math have consistently increased from 2001 to the present.
Saturn Elementary School is located in the city of Cocoa, on the
east coast of Florida , and is part of Brevard County Public Schools.
The school was built in 1966 and serves 785 students in pre-K through
sixth grade. Sixty-seven percent of the students are on free or
reduced lunch, and the minority rate is approximately 35 percent.
Saturn houses many ESE programs including Educable Mentally Handicapped,
Learning Disability, Emotionally Handicapped, Speech and Language
Impaired, Pre-K EELP, and the Gifted Center for the central area
of the county. The school has a 45 percent mobility rate.
The challenge at Saturn Elementary is for our students to reach
and maintain each year a Level 3 or higher on the FCAT test in reading
and math.
Pearson Digital Learning SuccessMaker was implemented at Saturn
Elementary in 2001-2002 school year, and was purchased through Title
I funds. Saturn's 88 seat computer lab provides all students in
grades one through six an opportunity to go to the lab for reading
and math five days a week. The teachers monitor, motivate and encourage
their students each day to reach the goals set by SuccessMaker to
reach the Level 3 FCAT target for reading and math. Students can
see on a daily basis, with the daily reports generated
by the program, the progress they are making in reading and in math.
When the students see their scores on a daily basis and are shown
how they can improve, they take ownership in their progress. Many
students give up their recess time to go to the lab a second time
during the day to reach the goals that are set by the program.
A huge bulletin board in Saturn's Courtyard is dedicated to the
pictures of the students that are making progress. The student's
pictures and names are also televised throughout the school on the
closed circuit TV on the morning announcements.
The Teacher Connection
Teacher involvement is a critical part of the success of the lab.
Teachers review daily and weekly reports on their student's progress
and the curriculum is adjusted to meet the needs of the students.
These reports are also shared with the students so they can chart
their progress and see the improvements that they are making.
For the 2001-2002 school year, Saturn Elementary's school grade
went from a "C" to an "A", vaulting ahead of 27 elementary schools
in the Brevard County School District.
Saturn has continued to improve the test scores since that year.
During the 2003-2004 school year 81 percent of Saturn students scored
a level 3 or higher on the FCAT reading. Seventy-two percent of
the students scored a level 3 or higher on the FCAT math test. Seventy-four
percent of the bottom 25 percent either scored a level 3 or made
an Annual Learning Gain. With the exception of one subject on one
grade level, all grades raised student performance in all areas.
Of the lowest ten Title I schools in the District, with like demographics,
Saturn has the highest student performance.
"Teachers and students love SuccessMaker as indicated by
their motivation and progress, and the program was highly supported
by the administration," says Miller.
