Andrew Jackson School Students Improve Math Achievement with SuccessMaker® Enterprise

Andrew Jackson School (PS 145) in Region 4 is a PreK–5 school serving 1266 students located in Brooklyn , NY . The school has a large Hispanic population with two bi-lingual classes in each grade. Rosa Escoto, the Principal, wanted a software program that would help improve her students’ reading and math achievement as well as support her ESL population. The availability of reading and math courseware offered in Spanish made SuccessMaker ® Enterprise from Pearson Digital Learning the hands down choice. The program has been in use since 1997. Recently, the school added a second SuccessMaker lab to provide reading and math instruction to more students. Students on average work on the program for half an hour, 2-3 times per week.

The results of the tests also show this school outperforming the students of similar schools. Significantly, the gap between the school and city average has narrowed.

Mr. Armado, a second grade bi-lingual teacher, says, "The ESL courseware puts kids in an environment where they can learn without fear of being embarrassed." He feels that SuccessMaker reinforces class instruction and is able to reach the students that need an alternate way of learning. He found that his kids looked forward to their SuccessMaker sessions as a treat during the school day. Most importantly, he feels that the program helped to build his students’ confidence.
