The demographic makeup of the student

- 70 percent Caucasian

- .01 percent African American
- .05 percent Asian
- 10.94 percent "Other minorities"
Forty-five percent of the students at Julian receive a free and reduced price lunch.
According to Superintendent Kevin Ogden, Julian Union Elementary had three distinct areas that needed to be addressed: focused intervention, options for gifted students, and the implementation of a powerful tool for special education. In their search for a solution, identified challenges and functionality were among the top factors that Julian Elementary considered prior to the purchase and implementation of SuccessMaker Enterprise® in 2004.
Each classroom at Julian has between two and four SuccessMaker stations. Julian Union Elementary utilizes the Macintosh™ platform for its SuccessMaker program. Students that scored at the Basic and Below Basic levels are targeted to spend at least 15 minutes per day with the software. However, according to Mr. Ogden, "in many classes, all students, including GATE students also participated."
Ogden also notes that the SuccessMaker program has worked particularly well for student in special education, including severely handicapped students. "I truly love that the program works for everybody, but I was really impressed by how well our special education students—including our severely handicapped students—have responded to SuccessMaker Enterprise. Special ed has so many different levels and every student’s need is completely individualized. SuccessMaker’s embedded assessment provides the perfect tool for teachers to pace students at their own unique learning level. All of our severely handicapped students scored advanced on the CAPA test!"
"We went from being a program improvement school, and three years later we were a California Distinguished School, which this school has never had happen to it in over 40 years of being in existence. So, that was a pretty phenomenal thing."

According to Ogden, "The partnership we have forged with Pearson Digital Learning is a cost effective and powerful strategy to ensure that every child can be successful in math and language arts. The tools that teachers have at their disposal enable them to meet each child’s unique needs."
