Hueneme School District
Port Hueneme, CA

"Unlike other assessment measures that
offer a one-shot view of student progresslike standardized
testsSuccessMaker provides a dynamic and continuous view of
student achievement throughout the school year. High Stakes Management
gives us the power to improve test scores and student learning through
its unique forecasting abilities."
Stephen
K. Carr, Director of Educational Technology, Hueneme School District
From 2000 to 2001, at every grade level, average SAT 9 Normal Curve
Equivalent (NCE) scores increased.
- From 2000 to 2001, at every grade level, the percentage of students
in the top quintile increased on the SAT 9.
- From 2000 to 2001, at every grade level, the percentage of students
in the lowest quintile decreased on the SAT 9.
- Hueneme School District is implementing Pearson Digital Learning
High Stakes Management to directly correlate student performance
in the courseware with achievement on state assessment.
Hueneme School District is located in Port Hueneme, Calif. on the
Ventura County coast north of Los Angeles. The district serves 8,700
students in grades K-8. Ten of its 11 schools are Title I schools,
and approximately 70 percent of students receive free and reduced
price lunch.
Improve achievement in reading and mathematics for all students
in grades four through eight in the classroom and on state standardized
tests.
Hueneme School District developed a district-wide system to meet
growing accountability requirements and bridge the gap between student
performance in the classroom and on the Stanford Achievement Test
(SAT 9). By using multiple measures to assess student progressincluding
SuccessMaker datathe district is working to monitor achievement
year-round, identify areas of difficulty, and provide focused instruction
and interventions to improve learning and performance on the SAT
9.
Hueneme School District implemented SuccessMaker in 2000 at each
school. Students are in the labs 30 minutes each day, three days
a week for mathematics and reading. Teachers and administrators
align SuccessMaker curriculum with District frameworks, state standards,
and the SAT 9. Teachers and administrators use SuccessMaker's®
management system and on-demand reports to assess student performance.
In addition, the district publishes a monthly summary report to
compare grade level progress in each school to make sure the courseware
is being used to its full potential.
In 2002, data from the SuccessMaker system will play an increasingly
important role in their efforts to improve student achievement,
thanks to Pearson Digital Learning new High Stakes Management service.
According to Steve Carr, Director of Educational Technology at Hueneme
School District, "High Stake Management allows us to set targets
for students using SuccessMaker courseware that result in improved
test scores on high stakes tests, this has been a powerful tool
to enable us to achieve real learning."
To determine if there is a correlation between student progress
in SuccessMaker and performance on the SAT 9, the Hueneme School
District provided Pearson Digital Learning Research and Measurement
Group with students' SuccessMaker course levels and SAT 9 test results
for 2000 and 2001. Pearson Digital Learning then conducted an OnTarget
Analysis, analyzing the quantitative relationship between students'
performance in the SuccessMaker program and their performance on
the SAT 9. This study is part of the High Stakes Management service.
The results showed a consistent and strong correlation between student
levels in SuccessMaker and performance on the SAT 9.
Hueneme can now predict the time a student needs to reach a specific
SuccessMaker level and see the relationship of the SuccessMaker
level to SAT 9 test achievement. Further, teachers can set SuccessMaker
target levels for specific achievement goals.
After implementing SuccessMaker, the Hueneme School District began
to see positive results in student learning in the classroom and
on the SAT 9 among students using SuccessMaker. From 2000 to 2001,
at every grade level, average SAT 9 Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE)
scores increased. In addition to a positive increase in the mean,
at each grade level the district saw a decrease in the percent of
students in the lowest quintile and an increase in the percent of
students in the top quintile.
