Franklin and the entire Cadillac Area Public School District were committed to improving standardized test scores, with a focus on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) and the Comprehensive Needs Assessment. As a Title 1 school, Franklin is also highly focused on closing the achievement gap and improving the education it delivers to all students, regardless of demographic or socioeconomic background.
With these goals in mind and SuccessMaker being adopted by the entire district, Franklin made the decision to implement its SuccessMaker program in 1994. Today, the school's lab schedules 13 classes each day, with every child using the program four times a week. Each individualized student session consists of 12 minutes of reading and 12 minutes of math instruction.
In leveraging SuccessMaker, the school has implemented a method of both individualizing instruction and monitoring and improving performance.
To ensure that the Franklin staff works together to maximize student learning, the school runs and analyzes session reports every day and gains reports every month. Through this regular analysis, the staff tracks each student's progress, predicts performance, and continues to more effectively monitor and individualize instruction.
SuccessMaker has yielded both qualitative and quantitative results for Franklin. Since implementing their ambitious SuccessMaker program, Franklin has realized substantial gains in both reading and math. The graph below shows the gains across all grades from 2004 to 2005 in English/Language Arts; this represents an average 7% increase in test scores, school wide.

The Comprehensive Needs Assessment score (see above) reflects a compilation of several common assessments created by district reading teachers as well as the SuccessMaker score. Each student is given a score on each assessment, which determines their level of proficiency. These scores are averaged together to get a composite average. This data is used to determine a need for services for students in kindergarten through fifth grades. |
District-wide, SuccessMaker has provided an excellent method for not only increasing accountability, but also improving student achievement. At a district level, Cadillac calculates reading and math gains using SuccessMaker reports at the beginning and end of the school year, and uses interim reports throughout the year as data-driven "check-ups" to help ensure that all schools stay on track. Cadillac also uses these reports to help predict district-wide performance in MEAP testing.
Since these same reports help demonstrate compliance with NCLB requirements, they serve multiple purposes in helping the school district as a whole—as well as each individual school like Franklin Elementary—achieve success.
