Creekview elementary students needed to
raise their test scores in math. The school was also not using its
computer labs effectively and needed a solution.
The goal at Creekview is for ninety percent
of kindergarten to third grade students to be at grade level and
meet all AYP (adequate yearly progress) goals.
In an effort to help raise test scores and
use the computer labs more effectively, Creekview Elementary School
implemented SuccessMaker courseware from Pearson Digital Learning
in February of 1999. The purchase was made possible by using a combination
of Title 1, Federal, and District Board of Education funds. Currently,
445 students in kindergarten through grade six use the program for
math and reading twice a week for 25 minutes a session.

Teachers become involved by monitoring their
students on SuccessMaker, and especially like the customized worksheets
produced by the SuccessMaker management program. Leigh Ludington,
a fifth grade teacher at Creekview says, "As a teacher, I
love the individualized distributive practice that SuccessMaker
provides my students." SuccessMaker helps teachers know what
areas to remediate and prescribe instruction. It provides consistent
practice for students along with more individualized instruction.
Students at Creekview enjoy SuccessMaker because they can see their
progress on a regular basis, and principal Jess Banning thinks it’s
a great tool for encouragement and motivation.
Each month, the student levels and gains report from SuccessMaker
is printed and given to Principal Banning. The students with the
highest gains are rewarded for a job well done.

working on SuccessMaker |
Since implementing SuccessMaker at Creekview
Elementary, there has been success on many fronts. For one, students
in grades one through five averaged a 14 point gain on the Utah
Core Math Test after the initial implementation, and scores have
maintained above district average for the last five years. In addition
to math gains, students have also increased their language arts
scores and kept them above the district average.
For the 2002-2003 school year, all Federal
AYP goals were met, and 90 percent of students in grades one through
three reached grade level or above.
When speaking of SuccessMaker and the how it has helped his students
achieve, Jess Banning articulates, "The proven success sells
itself."
