The state of New York announced recently 38 districts and charter schools
will have an opportunity to revise and resubmit their previous Reading
First Application.
In the 2004 New York State Reading First round, 10 out of 12 districts
that wrote Waterford Early Reading Program into their grant won. Successful
applicants for Reading First funding proved that they could deliver systematic
instruction in the following five components necessary for learning to read
well: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency
and reading comprehension strategies. The Waterford Early Reading Program
aligns with these Reading First standards and integrates classroom-based assessments
as also required by the initiative. View the press release.
