Pearson Digital Learning Ships KnowledgeBox on Apple’s Xserve

MACWORLD EXPO, San Francisco — Jan. 6, 2004 — Pearson Digital Learning has announced that it is now shipping the KnowledgeBox® digital learning system on Xserve, Apple’s rack-optimized server offering unmatched processing power coupled with high-bandwidth I/O, exceptional storage capacity, and remote management tools. Pearson Digital Learning is the leader in technologies for proven, comprehensive curriculum, assessment, and enterprise data management for K-12 schools.

KnowledgeBox® is the first K-6 Digital Learning System for reading/language arts, math, science and social studies. Using digital media that engages and challenges today's media sophisticated learner, KnowledgeBox supports a wide range of teaching and learning styles in the classroom, from direct instruction to small-group activities and independent work.

“KnowledgeBox represents a new generation of educational technology that is uniquely designed to engage and challenge today’s media sophisticated learners. It supports a wide range of teaching and learning styles in any setting from whole group instruction to small-group activities to independent work, " said Deb Bonanno, vice president of digital publishing for Pearson Digital Learning. "Yet, it is exceptionally easy to use by student and teacher alike. Coupled with the Xserve, KnowledgeBox gives schools a quick and easy way to integrate technology and high-quality instructional content into their curriculum."

"Within the K-12 education community Apple has built its reputation by providing critical technology solutions, while supporting and maximizing sound educational solutions," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "The Xserve coupled with Mac OS X Server software not only delivers KnowledgeBox’s vibrant, full-motion video and other rich media beautifully, but it offers schools a superior server solution for their entire enterprise.”

Using age-appropriate voiceovers, clever themes, and peer-friendly guides, KnowledgeBox delivers dynamic video, interactive games, text resources, and multimedia lessons. The program’s intuitive design and simple navigation make it easy for educators to integrate robust, meaningful content into their curricula. With just a few clicks, they can view and select multimedia components organized by theme or subject, build custom lessons to meet specific state and national standards, and archive lessons for future access. Students can use KnowledgeBox to conduct independent research, collaborate on class projects, or create multimedia presentations.
