NovaNET Provides Tools to Help ALL Secondary Students
Achieve Success
Mesa, Ariz. — Oct. 16, 2003 — Pearson Digital Learning
today announces the delivery of new GED 2002, SAT, and ACT practice
tests through its NovaNET electronic courseware.
NovaNET is an award-winning, online, standards-based curriculum
and assessment system designed for grades 6-12.
The NovaNET system’s GED, SAT, and ACT practice tests provide
students with the opportunity to practice with the key concepts,
problem solving strategies, test length, and test item formats
found in the GED 2002 test, and SAT and ACT exams. The practice
tests allow the instructor and the student to determine the student’s
readiness to take the official exam, as well as help students improve
their test-taking skills prior to taking the exam.
"Secondary learning institutions have extremely diverse audiences
and needs, which is why the NovaNET system is so highly regarded
by schools across the country," said Sandra Lassiter, senior
product manager. "Whether it's helping at-risk students recapture
credit and obtain their GED, or by helping students prepare for
collage placement exams, NovaNET's vast resources make it an essential
tool for today's high schools."
The NovaNET system features two new GED 2002 practice tests. Each
includes subtests in writing, social studies, science, language
arts and mathematics, with questions in a multiple-choice format.
The math test also includes approximately 10 short-answer items,
which is new for GED 2002. In addition, every GED candidate must
satisfactorily complete a timed essay on an assigned topic.
“We have groundbreaking scientific knowledge about the learning
process, but schools are restrained by the multiple obstacles of
shrinking financial resources, mounting social pressure, students’ personal
learning barriers and an unprecedented explosion of information,” he
said. “Fortunately, the education industry is beginning to
focus on how to manage learning with technology rather than simply
managing technology.”
The SAT practice exam contains three verbal subtests and three
math subtests. The verbal subtests test a student’s knowledge
of analogies, sentence completions, and critical reading. The math
subtests ask students to make quantitative comparisons, and answer
multiple choice and open-ended math questions. Each subtest may
be taken individually and is timed. Two and one-half hours should
be allowed for completion of the entire test.
The ACT practice exam contains four subtests — English,
math, reading and science. The ACT is a timed test and three hours
should be allowed for completion of the entire test.
NovaNET also offers prescriptive curriculum aligned to GED, SAT,
and ACT standards and objectives. The GED, SAT, and ACT prescriptive
curriculum begins with a pre-test for each module of instruction.
Lessons are assigned or prescribed by the system based on pre-test
results. Once the student completes all the assigned lessons in
the module, they must pass a post-test before they are allowed
to advance to the next module. If the student fails the post-test,
the system prescribes lessons again based on post-test results.
Students automatically move through the modules based on their
performance on the pre- and post-tests. The prescriptive method
allows students to focus their learning on skills and concepts
that they have not yet mastered and allows them to skip lessons
that cover skills and concepts in which they have demonstrated
mastery. The GED, SAT, and ACT prescriptive curriculum helps students
prepare to take the GED 2002, SAT or ACT exam, and the practice
tests allow instructors and students to determine when they are
prepared to take the actual exam. The practice tests also allow
students to practice and improve their test-taking skills prior
to taking the official exam.
The GED, SAT and ACT practice tests will be distributed to all
current NovaNET subscribers at no additional charge.
The NovaNET system delivers the most comprehensive,
interactive and engaging online curriculum, testing, assessment,
student management, and record-keeping, designed specifically for
middle and high school learners. The NovaNET system’s thousands
of hours of basic skills, middle and high school English, mathematics,
science, social studies, electives, ESL, GED preparation, SAT/ACT
preparation, life skills, school-to-work, and post-secondary curriculum
and assessment programs are aligned to national and state standards.
