Pearson Education Technologies Announces Winner of NovaNET® 2003 Student Essay Contest

MESA, Ariz. — May 21, 2003 — Pearson Education Technologies today announced that Franklin White, a senior at Martin High School in Arlington, Texas, is the winner of the NovaNET 2003 Student Essay Contest.

NovaNET is an online, standards-based curriculum, assessment, and student recordkeeping system designed specifically for middle and high school learners. White’s winning essay describes his journey from being a "two-time dropout kid with a bad attitude" to "a 19-year-old senior who is finally graduating and moving on to greater things in life," thanks to the NovaNET system.

White accessed the NovaNET system two hours a day, twice a week through an after school program at his high school. He used the system to recover credits in core academic areas, moving from one subject to the next. Through the use of the system, he was able to earn credits in half the time it would have taken in a traditional classroom. He will graduate from his high school on June 2.

White explained in his essay, "NovaNET is a life saver to anyone who is willing to work hard to improve learning every day ... I can gladly say that I think of myself now as a person who accomplished a great feat in life through this program."

"The quality of Franklin’s work truly demonstrates a winning performance, one that is reflected in his essay and the journey he has undertaken to graduate. We congratulate Franklin on his outstanding achievements and thank his teacher for her great support. We look forward to sharing his essay with our community of parents, teachers, and students nationwide," said Sandra Lassiter, NovaNET senior product manager.

As the winning contestant, White and his teacher, Devin Lee, will receive an all expenses paid trip to the Pearson Education Technologies 2003 Users’ Conference in November at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. At the conference, White will have the opportunity to read his essay in the General Session. The essay also will be published on the Pearson Education Technologies Web site, as well as in the company’s bi-monthly e-newsletter.

Due to the exceptional quality of the entries received this year, Pearson Education Technologies also recognized several students whose essays were worthy of Honorable Mention:

  • Danielle Feldhau, Houston County Career and Technology Center, Warner Robbins, Ga.
  • Kelly Keene, Spring Lake Park District, Spring Lake, Minn.
