Florida School Recognition Program Rewards Schools that Demonstrate
High Performance and Significant Improvement
MESA, Ariz. — Jan. 30, 2003 — For the 2001-02 school
year, the 2002 Florida School Recognition Program bestowed awards
on more than 1,300 of the 2,515 Florida schools that received a
letter grade. While many factors contribute to the success of these
schools, several share something in common. Nearly one-quarter
of the schools that received awards utilize a software-based curriculum
program called SuccessMaker® Enterprise.
The Florida School Recognition Program rewards schools that have
sustained high student performance or demonstrated substantial
improvement in student performance. Schools that receive an “A” or
improve at least one performance grade from the previous year are
eligible for recognition and financial awards.
Through the program, 861 schools received an “A” performance
grade for the 2001-02 school year. Nearly 25 percent of these schools
incorporate SuccessMaker courseware into their programs. In addition,
six of the seven schools that improved three performance grades
in one year also incorporate the SuccessMaker courseware. In all,
more than 315 Florida schools that implement SuccessMaker earned
recognition and financial awards for receiving an “A” or
improving at least one performance grade.
Of the 861 schools that received an “A” in 2002, Meadowlane
Elementary in urban Hialeah, Fla. was rated an “A” school
for the second time in the past three years. From 1999 to 2000,
Meadowlane Elementary improved three performance grades — from
a “D” to an “A” — due to significant
improvement in student performance on the FCAT.
“We’ve done many things at our school to move from
a ‘D’ to an ‘A.’ One of them was improve
our use of the SuccessMaker program. We sat down with the teachers
and planned out exactly what we wanted to do to bring up the skills
of our students, and then talked about how SuccessMaker could help
us do that. SuccessMaker plays an integral part in our efforts,” said
George Kovachy, principal of Meadowlane Elementary.
